Try, Try

February 27th

Happy Friday things:

  • There are two words that I try not to start my sections with here.  One of those is ‘I’.  It is a word I'll occasionally start a sentence with, but try not to start the paragraph/section with.  The other word is 'today.'  It is very tempting to start each section with the word ‘today’ probably followed with ‘I’. I know I do it, but try not to.  In one of the boxes I unpacked there was a diary of mine from November of 1974.  It contains one week of entries with every single day starting with the words ‘Today I.’  I was almost ten years old.  It was a fun read.  There was a lot of TV in my life then.  
  • Another thing I found was a bag that said ‘fossils’ on it.  It might have once belonged to my former father-in-law?  I'd like to learn more about rocks and such so this was a fun find.


  • Then I found some issues of Rocks and Minerals from the 1950's that belonged to my Uncle Bill.  My reading list is growing!


  • At the studio this afternoon I tried working on making another flat cap.  Things aren't working the way I had hoped.  Honestly, I haven't sewn in such a long time it is no wonder.  This was to be a practice cap.  I'm learning things and relearning things about sewing and the fabric I'm using.  These are good things.  That I have to take it apart and start over is also a good learning experience.  Thankfully, I haven't added the bill yet.



  • One thing that happened that I'm only sort of happy with, I'm going to be the new exchequer (treasurer) of the local SCA group.  This will be the third time in 40 years in this Barony and the fourth time total.

 You found it! January 1st. Welcome to a new year of me looking for happiness and gratitude within my day. Thank you for being here. I'm going to try to make a small change to my life habits and I'm going to attempt to bring that to my daily blog.   A recent video I saw was about habits to add to a morning to make a happier life. One of these suggestions was to start the day with an intention. That should mean something mindful or positive. It might turn into a goal for me as I tend to be practical so my mind works that way more. One intention for today was going to include getting out for a walk. As the wind blows and the temperature drops, I'm debating that. That is also more like a goal. The other was to do something different that I might not otherwise do. Writing an intention down before my day starts and trying to follow-through will be part of this. I hope you join me as I attempt to build this new habit. Birka Day Two

 January 24th Intention for the day: Look for the positive/proactive side in all the exchanges possible. Here are some happy things from today: Much of the early part of my day was spent volunteering at the event.  I also attended a meeting for exchequers (treasurers).  There is a possibility that I will be doing that again. I got to spend a little bit of time with my new protégés.  They both know that I want them to update their information on their wiki pages.   I ended up having a lot of fun with a friend who tried to steal a French fry from me.  It became a lovely game of trying to get a snack without the other noticing.  During court this afternoon some wonderful people were given awards for their deeds.  One of these people is a dear friend and the current Seneschal of our Barony.  He was made a Member of the Order of the Mark.  This is a new peerage level award in the SCA.  Here is a link that describes the current peer ...

My Moving Day

 January 3rd Intention for the day: to enjoy the moving process today. Here are some happy things from today: This morning I woke early, only stayed under the covers a little while, and then got busy with my day.  It felt good to be motivated to get some of this stuff done.  Packing had to happen before my friends showed up to help. Friends arrived a few hours later.  I had achieved less packing than I wanted to but more than I really thought I would.  This seemed like a good position to be in.  We got most of the things loaded between the two pickup trucks.  We made good time and we got to the new house before I thought we would.  Things got unloaded and my bed put back together.  We didn't have the headboard or a few other things and went back for them after going out for a nice lunch.
